OK it’s that time of year again. What will it be this year?
Lose 10 pounds. Go to the gym 3 times a week. Read my bible everyday. Pray for 30 minutes every morning. Learn a new language. Write a book. Fix the broken window at the house….
Have you ever said any of these things?
How long did you make it? 6 Months, 3 Months, 2 weeks? Tell the truth now. 🙂
So here is the question. Why? Why do we not finish the things we so desperately want to do?
My answer. “Meaning”. That’s right meaning. It may just be that our goals are just not meaningful enough.
If your goal is to lose 10 pounds , or maybe to pray every day for 30 minutes. Who cares? It’s just not good enough. Who cares that you can now fit into a size small pants, who cares that you wake up early everyday and pray for a set amount of time so you can feel better about your day. Sounds harsh I know….
But what if it had a deeper meaning? What if the reason you wanted to lose the weight was something completely different. What if you wanted to be able to take longer walks on the beach with your grandchildren, or have more energy to run in that marathon to raise money for kids in orphanages. What if you prayed every morning not because it’s the “Christian” thing to do or it makes you feel a bit better but because you want to have a conversation with God, a communion with the maker of everything. A time where nothing else mattered but you and Him, if it takes 30 minutes 10 minutes or an hour.
Meaning changes everything. Meaning gives us grace to do the hard work. Meaning gives us faith to overcome obstacles. Meaning gives us hope to not give up on your dreams….. because it’s not just about me. If I don’t do this thing someone is going to walk alone, someone just might go hungry. Somebody just may be waiting to talk to me.
If our goals have no great meaning…..they will eventually become meaningless.
What is your resolution?
